I have this struggle EVERY DAY. I don't know why it's so hard to JUST DO IT. It seriously eats at me how easy it is to do but yet I just don't. There is honestly no good answer except. "I don't know why, I just don't." There's actually a lot of things I know I should be doing that I "just don't do" but this one totally changes how my whole day goes if I just get my lazy bum to do it!
Praying in the morning as I get up and reading my scriptures.
I need some tricks or tips or something! A lot of times I'm super hard on myself with thinking, "well if it really was that important to you, you would just do it." Which is totally true for the most part. I think it's hard to start any kind of habit. I've never been awesome at it and I go back and forth with being awesome at it and then just being a bum about it. You'd think I would want to try my hardest to make it a habit because I'm so much happier when I actually do it and it just starts the day off right. But sometimes Lydia wakes up needing me right away. Sometimes Warren crawls in bed with me and then just begs and begs and begs for apple juice RIGHT then or he's sure he's gonna die ;)... and then my day just goes on and I just don't do it. Why are some things just so hard for me to just do?!
Something so simple. blah

Oh my gosh, this is my SAME struggle! I feel like since having kids, it's impossible to have a regular morning routine (get up, scriptures, prayer, exercise) for myself! If you find the secret to success, pass it along!
ReplyDeleteHoly smokes I have been thinking this so much lately. I try and then it's 2:00 in the afternoon and I realize why my day is so crappy-I forgot to pray!! If you figure something out let me know. It's so hard though, I totally agree! Especially when helping kids, because their needs do come first a lot of times. And then, I finally do kneel down and brylie tells that she has to go potty! Ahhh!!! My mom told me once that she leaves her watch off until she prays. Too bad I don't wear a watch...maybe wedding ring. I seriously don't know. Let me know when you figure it out!!
ReplyDeleteYou are SO not alone! I vividly remember sitting in Relief Society lessons as a newly turned 18 yr old. I would hear the teacher pleading with the sisters to find the time to read their scriptures because it was so very important, even though it was hard to carve out the time from their busy days. I naively said to myself, "Oh brother, it's NOT that hard, you just do it!" Wow, little did I know how much I was going to eat my own words! I have often asked myself why something so simple is so hard to do consistently... I guess it's probably because Satan knows how powerful scripture study will be in our lives and the lives of our children and family. He will obviously do everything to keep it from happening. The other thing is that as we progress in life, taking on more responsibility, we are stretched to our breaking point and then as we turn to The Lord he makes weak things strong. I just wrote a post about this on the homeschooling blog I write for. I shared Dad's analogy of a Proving Ground that I just love! Here is the link:

Love you!!!
ReplyDeleteHey, Janica I still have problems doing this like I should, the key I think is to just keep trying to do better.
ReplyDeleteOr maybe we should define ourselves as people that just love to do these things, like Seth's "I Am Method" and through "afformations" just reprogram ourselves. We should ask ourselves and ponder on: "Why is it that I love to read my scriptures and pray every day" Maybe we could work on this together. I need help too.
I have heard these suggestions for young mothers I will share:
Remember you can pray anytime anywhere. "Come to me in every thought, doubt not fear not" You know all those thoughts we think in our heads? Well we can invite Him into them. So on days when the second you wake up there is an emergency you cannot postpone for prayer and scriptures just send your thoughts up to Heaven and pray in your heart for help and remember Him always. Or just upon waking when the kids are in bed with you for quiet time, bring out a scripture story book and have cuddle time and prayer time with them during wake-up, and/or go-to-sleep time, those are times they will remember.
The important thing is to just find a time that is good for us. The problem with young mothers is that that is hard to do consistently. Kids' needs don't have time tables, maybe situations where it is possible could be watched for.
Keep a ratty copy of the scriptures in your kitchen window and before you wash up turn to the place and you can read even one verse and think about it. Then at the first lull, catch up and check in with Him again. The scriptures don't run if they get wet, it just makes the pages easier to turn.
Reading and pondering one scripture verse can be enough and have lots to teach us too. I think I try to read the scriptures too fast or just finish a page or chapter, and I miss a lot of meaning that I would get out of pondering one good verse.
I have the same problem, so my day starts after I take my husband to work.
I can do my reading prayer and exercises then. But sometimes I still distract myself. I need to do better too.
After companion prayer at night, we can take time to pray individually before sleep.
We are not failing at this as long as we keep trying. Just remember that.
Love you lots
